Because we can significantly reduce the cost of plastic products when we use CaCO3 filler masterbatch.
There is a major difference between price and (total) cost. “It is a difference to buy cheap masterbatches versus to buy masterbatches cheap”.
While the addition of CaCO3 lower the price per kilo of the MB, at the end of the day it will often turn out more expensive! Most converters in the industry dose per volume and not by gravimetric feeding systems. As CaCO3 increase the specific density in relation to most pigments (at least organic ones) it is not uncommon that overdosing occur.
With a CaCo3 addition it is not uncommon to have more process- and product problems but the purchaser very seldom have a holistic picture of the cost of wrong quality and only focuses on the kilo price.
I have been in the masterbatch business so long that I see a generation change in this aspect – at least in Europe. Clariant, and some other masterbatch companies, have spent so many years in trying to convince the industry that it often costs more to buy cheap. We have put a lot of efforts into trying to explain that there is a difference between what You want and what You need. Collaboration and communication with the masterbatcher- compounder are keywords that rule – not just a kilo price on a piece of paper.
